Keeping warm with a fire

Not so many plots allow you to have fires which is a pity. We had plenty of woody cuttings we have been keeping over the last 12 months with the idea of burning and returning to the soil., too big for compost. I was hoping the site would be empty so our smoke would not be annoying and like most times, it was. Cuttings included last year and some of this year’s pruning from raspberries, gooseberries, black currents and even quite a bit from the rosemary bush.

We came home with

  • turnips
  • carrots
  • kale
  • sprouts

With produce on the plot thinning out a lot now it is interesting to see the shape of what we have. This time last year it was all overgrown and under the cover of plastic, now it seems to have naturally become seven different beds and I feel the need to plan for the new year.
