Along with seeds that will take a long time to germinate I also sowed old radish seed is clumps along the line. The idea of this is to remind me where the rows of seeds are are, while the main crop is slowly germinating, the radish will pop up quickly. Once the radish are ready to pick the main crop seed has germinated and can carry on growing without the marker crop. Today was the day to start pulling up some of those radish. Being old seed I was surprised how well they had done and given me an early crop. The parsnip seed it all looking good and now they will have a bit more room without so much radish. I’ll be picking more radish next week.
I banked up the rest of the potatoes, all rows were now showing. As well as banking up I also covered each plant with some of the home made compost.
In the garden I have planted all the peas and having left it a week to see if the squirrels would dig them up this has not happened, so I had some spare pea plants. Peas on the plot have mixed success. It’s sometimes too hot and dry at the plot which means between visits they frazzle away. I’ve given them plenty of water and planted in more of the home made compost, so I’m hoping the soil is a lot better and less sandy. If they do anything then all is good, if they don’t then nothing lost.
Today has been the hottest day of the year so far, and the hottest April day for millions of years for everyone in the UK. I wouldn’t normally be using a hose pipe in April but today I gave the plot a good watering. The row of carrots is showing more and more, the row of beetroot not so much.
