Monthly Harvest Aug 25

August 2025

August temperatures did not break any records although at the beginning of the month it got warmer and warmer until we got to 29c. By the middle of the month temperatures started to drop. I am sure the average temperature for August 25 has been higher than previous years.

The wonder crop of the month is celery, sown on a chance as I had the seed to use and it has grown mostly by itself to give us a constant supply of celery. I picked one lot as a whole heart of celery whereas since then I have just picked sticks as needed. Out of six plants I am sure we are not going to be able to eat it all. Certainly something I will grow next year.

Corn on the cob has done well and this year we took the corn off the cobs and put them in the freezer. Some cobs we had left too late to pick and a lot of the corn was past it’s best, which is why in the end we picked it all and froze the kernels. Knowing that mice/rats eat all the corn on the plot means I won’t try it up there again, but I may grow a bit more in the garden.

Potatoes in the garden were pulled up and the good soil and protected environment of the garden gave us a massive crop of just over 3.5kg out of just three plants.

Cucumbers in the garden have given us a lot, while apples from the plot has meant we have not had to add apples to our weekly shopping list for a number of weeks. I notice everyone’s apple trees at the allotment site are loaded with apples, maybe it’s a good year.

Not many onions, I did not grow many as I was still cautious of allium leaf miner but we did not suffer any problems this year. All the onions were grown under netting. Next year I’ll plant out the normal amount and we will go back to normal. The onions were a mix of sets and seed, with the seed ones a lot smaller than the sets.

I was not going to grow beans this year as we still have a freezer full but in the end we did anyway. We haven’t picked many as the weather was either really hot for long periods of time or really wet which meant we didn’t have the best growth. A lot of the pods I left for seed.
