July 2025
We nearly got to 30c but didn’t quite make it. We did have the hottest day of the year but no records. It alerted three times that we were in a heatwave, the newspapers seemed to think this was an extraordinary happening but I’m not so sure. I need to get my stats to start logging the number of heatwaves per year. Likewise I need it to keep an eye on average temperatures as while we didn’t hit the hottest in July, an average temperature of 20.5c was higher than other years.

The big harvest in July is the potatoes, this year planted at the “good end” of the plot and so high hopes. We did have a good harvest, not the best ever (that was 2021) but still one I was happy with and plenty for us. We dug up the potatoes in the garden (see August) and got over 1kg per plant which if we had done the same on the plot then we would have so many potatoes we wouldn’t know how to store them all. Next year I’ll prep the ground a lot more with manure; it’s easier to do that in the confined space of the garden. At the plot I’ve not normally done much ground prep for potatoes but possibly that is what I should be going. It makes it sound like it has been a bad year which it has not, I just know it could be an even better year.
Garlic did very well with just three bulbs that were not viable while all those that were ended up big segmented. Little looking after while in the ground and gave lots when it came to harvest.
The cherry tree in the garden has stopped having a good year followed by a bad year, we had another good year when it should not had been. I did prune the tree nearer to when it should be and I didn’t do it as hard. Also, last year we didn’t pick as many cherries as we got bored with them and we have done the same this year too. We gave a lot away this year but also made cake.
Beetroot, carrots, beans, we are currently picking them as we need them. Carrots have not been that great but the ones that did germinate and grow have helped us along.
