The days have been hot, it has been an actual heatwave for most of the week. Along with a lot of watering at the plot we have also been picking:
- blackcurrants
- peas
- raspberries
The onions look like they will be ready soon, so do the potatoes.
Netting over the berries has worked meaning for the first time in a couple of years we are getting most of the fruit instead of the birds. Because it is just draped over it means access is easier too so I’m able to pick them. No gooseberries on the bushes that were new a couple of years ago, one of them has died, a bit of a shame. We don’t seem to have many redcurrants, maybe the bush is just a bit too old now.
The furry lettuce plants have finally flowered giving small blue flowers that last just one day and are completely gone in the evenings. Once they have finished I’ll dig them up, I was interested to see how they would flower if we were never going to eat them.
I planted out small swede plants which had for some reason gone very leggy in their seed trays which I’m not sure why they would do that. Maybe the hot weather and lack of water has caused them to panic? I’m not convinced we will get much from these but I planted them in deep holes all the same.
