It has been well overdue, the yearly “trimming of the trees and bushes” in the garden. They started off all pretty small 13 years ago when we planted them along the fence at the back of the garden. The idea was to eventually block out the houses behind us so that we were not so over looked. It took eight years or so for them all to finally grow tall enough to do that, and ever since it is a yearly battle to cut them back, if we left the, they would take over the garden.
I would normally do this in the autumn or winter but it’s never much fun and so ends up being just before spring time instead. This year it’s got to May before I finally did it. The chopping and cutting is fun and doesn’t take long but tidying up afterwards does. The benefit is that I put all that I can through the shredder and take up to the plot to add to the compost, it does really well.
On the plot we have two compost bays, an active one and last year’s one just sitting and rotting down. I have mostly dug out all the compost out of the active one and I have more than filled up the active bay with the shreddings from the bushes and trees. This will die down over the months and it is the moment I switch over the bays and start a new compost heap.
While at the plot I managed to pull up a load more radish, they have all done so well.
