The Corn Jungle

Every day, the sweetcorn plants grow taller and we have started to see corn cobs growing on the sides. The first time in many years that we have tried to grow sweetcorn. Previous attempts were done in a square foot garden and it produced very small cobs probably fit to feed a (small) animal and certainly did not grow anywhere near as tall as the ones we have now. I’m hopeful, but we will see if we actually get anything worthwhile this time. Saying that, the impressive height and the speed of growth means we may make sweetcorn a feature next year.

The jungle theme continues with the runner and french beans, they have both liked the wet but warm weather and long days. All of a sudden we started to see beans ready to pick and once you see one you suddenly see a whole load of them. I wonder if we normally start picking beans a couple of weeks later and this year things are early, or maybe I am just making that up in my mind.

I keep removing new growth from the tomatoes and thinning the leaves to let light in and a good airflow. We only have tomato plants in the garden this year, mostly they suffer from blight on the plot and were blown about quite a bit. Also different this year is that I planted out the small seedlings directly out in the bed instead of potting on to get larger and then putting them out. They don’t seem to have suffered and it’s been less hassle.

I’m pleased with the garden at the moment. It’s still the same small garden but it seems much larger due to the high plants and the flowers over spilling on to the paths meaning you can no longer see the whole garden in one go. Instead, you have to go on a journey and explore. See if you can spot the big fat Daisy cat, snoozing in the corner
