July 2026
What can I say, it is what it is. I’m still not visiting the plot as much as I should be and on top of that we had a week away and let’s not forget that it has not rained for weeks/months and we have gone through various heat waves so far this year.
French beans suffered greatly when we were away with various plants dried up when we got back. Everything is suffering, but the biggest flop this year are the potatoes. I would expect to get 750g to 1kg of potatoes per plant and so far this year we have got around 1kg per row of plants (more to dig up but not expecting anything exciting, I’ve only not yet dug them up as we are in month two of no rain and so I’m happy for them to stay in the dry soil until I have time to dig them up). The potatoes in the garden have helped out greatly where we did get the expected harvest from each plant, but we only have five plants. The reason for all this? It’s bad soil at that end of the plot, I need to sort that out in the autumn with lots of manure dug in. Also, the lack of rain and the high heat. Not just warm days but hot winds for some of these days which made everything as if it was in a fan oven. The potatoes died back way too soon. Saying that, we have a nice harvest of new potatoes.
Onions did well, no allium leaf minor which is good to see and has taken a couple of years to get on top of. The red onions were good and the white onions I’ll be pulling next month. Blackberries have been everywhere on the side of the site and hanging over from abandoned plots. I could had picked a lot more.
